Breaking an opioid addiction can be extremely difficult. Methadone/Suboxone maintenance is not a cure, but a treatment that can be very effective if taken properly. Methadone works in several ways:
Methadone does not make you feel "high" or "drugged" when taken at the appropriate dose, so you can lead a normal life. Methadone has gradual, long-lasting effects to take away the hunger or craving for other opioid drugs. When taking methadone regularly, other opioids will not work to create a "high" as they can without methadone treatment. Methadone doses must by taken by mouth once daily, so you avoid using injection needles and reduce your risk of contacting diseases such as hepatitis and HIV. Methadone helps you live a healthier and better life, free of illegal drugs.
Many people say that methadone or Suboxone makes them feel "normal" for the first time in a long while. While it may not cure addiction, it is used as part of a recovery program at OATS which may also include referrals to counseling services and help from the clinic staff. Our mission at OATS is to provide the highest quality addiction services to opioid-addicted individuals who seek methadone treatment, with an emphasis on patient self-reliance, dignity, and compassion.
